Aluminum Grotto & Public Ground
Bangkok, Thailand | 2024 | HAS Design
A temporary pavilion designed for the 90th ASA Expo, Aluminum Grotto & Public Ground reimagines the concept of civic space within a dense urban context. Inspired by natural grottoes and traditional Thai stilt architecture , the installation offers a quiet, elevated refuge for public gathering, learning, and rest.
The design prioritizes openness and community: its lifted form creates shaded public ground below, while filtered natural light above evokes a ritual-like atmosphere for events, meditation, and exhibitions. Beyond the exposition, the pavilion is slated for continued use as a cultural space, including workshop, lectures, and a library. It also
responds to Bangkok’s green space scarcity by creating a new type of "gray" public ground, not purely park or building, but a hybrid environment for shared experience and reflection.
